The Kenya Re Training Academy was a hive of activities on Wednesday, 13th March 2024. The activities were brought about by insightful trainings that were conducted for the local insurance & reinsurance market in Kenya. The training was officially opened by the General Manager – Reinsurance Operations, Ms. Beth Nyaga. The General manager underscored Kenya Re’s dedication to training and upskilling the local market – noting that training was one of Kenya Re’s core mandate during its inception years. She noted that Kenya Re is keen on the big picture – which is a more knowledgeable and upskilled insurance/reinsurance industry.
For the first time since the Training Academy was launched in September 2023, it hosted an external trainer – a renowned and respected Actuary, Mr. Abed Mureithi who currently serves as the Managing Director and Principal Actuary at ACTSERV - a leading actuarial consulting firm. Mr. Mureithi delved into aspects such as Actuarial Approaches to Reinsurance Pricing, Types of Reinsurance: Coverages and Structures, Actuarial Approaches to Reinsurance Pricing, Reinsurance Placement Process and many others. Mr. Mureithi enriched his presentation by making the session more interactive and sharing practical scenarios for the participants to seek tangible solutions.
Fraciah W. Wainaina – Seasoned Actuary and currently Reinsurance Underwriter in our Local Business department, made a pitch to the participants on Kenya Re’s improved capacity to offer business support in various lines/classes of business. The pitch was aimed at interesting participants on consideration for more business. She also shared contact information for various business functions and assured the participants on quick turnaround times as part of the enhanced Customer Experience efforts in the Corporation.
The training climaxed with a presentation from our Acting Assistant Manager – Claims Management department – Mr. Joel Irungu that shared intrinsic insights on claims management. His impressive presentation encompassed topical areas in claims recoveries, treaty clauses, excess of loss treaty clauses and claims documentation. The Acting Assistant Manager also simplified the claims process for ease of comprehension by participants. The session, that was quite interactive, spurred deeper understanding on claims management by the participants.
The training ended with closing remarks from Ms. Lucy Kagwiria, Manager, Marketing & Business Development, and Coordinator of Kenya Re Training Academy. She reaffirmed the Corporation’s deliberate endeavours to consistent training and capacity building. The Manager, Marketing also informed the participants on upcoming trainings to be held at the College of Insurance in Kenya (a key Kenya Re partner); adding that the trainings will continue to be richer in content as the Corporation intends to onboard as many expert external trainers as possible to complement internal capacity.
