The Kenya Re Training Academy, on 10th July 2024, successfully hosted a Life Assurance training for the local (Kenya) insurance market. The full-day training attracted the attendance of twenty-seven (27) insurance practitioners from diverse functions such as underwriting, claims, marketing and customer experience. Just like all other trainings conducted at the Academy, the training was conducted free of charge for the participants.

The workshop was officially opened by the Group Managing Director (GMD), Dr. Hilary Wachinga. The GMD encouraged participants to invest in the Corporation through uptake of shares at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.  He also gave a good bird’s eye-view of the Corporation underscoring its financial strength, excellent world-class ratings and un-matched service excellence to all customers. Dr. Wachinga climaxed his remarks by encouraging participants to embrace practical learning to deepen their understanding in the subject matters. He expressed his optimism on positive yields from the training to benefit the participants such as prudent underwriting which will result to profitable business for the Corporation.

Jointly, Ms. Rose Waganda – Acting Manager Claims (representing our General Manager Reinsurance Operations), Ms. Lucy Kagwiria - Manager, Marketing, Business Development & Kenya Re Training Academy Coordinator and Mr. Yoves Angwenyi – Acting Manager, Life Business, welcomed participants to the training and lauded their quest for knowledge to nurture their careers and better serve the companies they work for.

The morning session onboarded an external facilitator – Mr. Simon Gichane – Head of Training at KCB Bank who also serves as the Chairman of Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) who led the session on the end-to-end underwriting process in Life Assurance. His presentation covered areas such as artificial intelligence in underwriting, tele underwriting, dealing with averse risk, the future of underwriting and so much more. The afternoon session was facilitated by Mr. Stephen Kithuka - Kenya Re’s Senior Life Underwriter. Mr. Kithuka shared valuable insights into claims management in life assurance. Both sessions incorporated round-table discussions, case studies and practical business scenarios. Kenya Re’s Life Business department was an integral part of the training in providing fresh perspectives of Life Assurance from a reinsurance perspective.
